Are Anthropologists a Dangerous Tribe?
To begin, read through these articles: Focus on ethics in the social sciences. Analyze the ethical concerns of Chagnon’s ethnographic work, Tierney’s work, and the response from the anthropological community. Students will work in small groups(four or less) to present their analysis. Analysis must include:
Literature Review/Summary of Sources: Synthesize the information, focusing on making meaning of the three articles.
Evaluation of Behavior (both Chagnon and Tierney): Was Chagnon’s research ethical? What ethical violations occurred? Did Tierney report on Chagnon’s work in an ethical manner?
Analysis of Ethics/Ethical Guidelines of the AAA: How did the ethical guidelines of the AAA impact Chagnon’s work? Tierney’s work?
Ethics in Anthropology Summary: How does an anthropologist remain ethical in the field?
Follow APA formatting when citing sources. Students must include two additional credible sources.
Projects may be in essay or presentation format, and MUST exhibit sound understanding of ethics in the social sciences.
Student projects are due September 5th. Students will work on this assignment 8/30, 8/31, and 9/4 in class.
